PROJECT PROFILE

We discuss our custom entertainment wall unit project. This one hit close to home for us - read on to learn more about how we approached this design!

We are thrilled to be able to sit down and discuss another one of our Project Profiles! Today, we’re going to discuss an exciting project that we did in the Spring of 2021 - a custom walnut entertainment unit. 

The Integrity Construction team loves putting together these Project Profiles because it allows us to sit down, discuss our favourite recent pieces, and genuinely connect with our audience - like having a cup of tea with a friend. This particular walnut piece was very special to us because it was actually a project we commissioned for ourselves! We adore walnut wood for its richness and timeless style, and couldn’t wait to have another intentional, original piece to put up in our home. 

Because we were the client and it was for our own home, it gave us another opportunity to work from total carte blanche, which is always exciting.  

Of course, while there’s nothing wrong with an off-the-rack piece, we wanted something very original, something no one else would have! We also wanted it to complement the other custom pieces in our home, and we’re so fortunate that we were able to build it exactly to our taste. 

Whether it’s for ourselves or for one of our valued clients, we operate from a place of total customization. From the number of drawers or other cabinetry to the style of wood - we make it happen!

Getting Started

Before we got started with our custom entertainment wall unit, we had a pretty ordinary television stand. Basic functionality, but didn’t look wonderful!

I love to collect books and other treasures, and so beside the television stand I placed a few shelf towers to hold these items, and it just wasn’t super functional. Eventually, we started noticing that the plastic was peeling, so we decided to take the plunge!

The first order of business was sitting down to discuss our wants for the project, our non-negotiables, and even those pie-in-the-sky dreams that we’d never dared to consider before now.

Here was our personal checklist when discussing the design components of the project:

• For Sean, a huge thing was space for a larger television! (I think he hit the home run with this project!) 
• Lots of open (yet secure) shelf space for my books and other valuable treasures.
• Cupboards for speaker storage, console storage, extra books, board games, and other entertainment-adjacent items!
• Easy wire access, but also discreet wire access. 

The finished product was a gorgeous wall-to-floor piece that features a custom space for our (new!) television, built exactly to specification. We also incorporated plenty of sturdy open shelf space, and lower storage cupboards. 

Custom Furniture: Space For Unique Ideas

We had rather a stroke of brilliance during the design phase, and actually made the bottom of the entertainment unit fabric, so that the sound from the speakers can easily travel underneath. The wall unit is slightly raised off of the floor, so this ensures we can store our speakers safely, store the wires out of sight, and ensures we still get perfect sound quality. 

The fact is, sometimes you simply don’t know what you don’t know - and this is the beauty of completely custom pieces. With an experienced design team, you can discover whether you can incorporate unique ideas like a fabric base - and whether it actually will work. 

The key is making custom furniture work for your life and your preferences, rather than the other way around!

The Staying Power of Walnut Wood

Of course, we fell in love with walnut wood even before we did our custom light fixture project. Walnut is very trendy, and it has the staying power that oak and mahogany did in the 1980s and 1990s. 

While supply chain issues remain a consideration, we prepare by stockpiling more popular woods. We’re also very fortunate that our excellent reputation at Integrity Construction precedes us, and this usually helps mitigate any supply chain snags.

While somewhat costly, walnut pieces will really stand the test of time, and can make excellent heirloom pieces if kept in the right conditions!  

Walnut is rich and luxurious, and the colour can complement any room and accompanying furniture pieces.
